esprit d’escalier (staircase wit) is thinking of a clever comeback when it is too late. The phrase can be used to describe a riposte to an insult or any witty remark that comes to mind too late to be useful.

Wow I love the French, this totally epitomises all the troubles I’ve been having for the past twenty-eight years!

    • LOL yes it’s impossible to go all “o shi I take back that feeble comeback, please pretend I said *this* instead”. grah, the stakes are unbelievably high in verbal sparring!

  1. hahaha i read this on wiki too! along with deja vu and presque vu (when something’s on the tip of your tongue but you just can’t quite crystallize it). the French really are good at this…
